How to read this chart

Find the number of minutes on a timesheet, then read across for the decimal-hour equivalent. Highlighted rows (15, 30, 45, 60) are the values worth memorizing — every other value is just a quarter-hour, half-hour, or full hour away from one of them.

Rounding for payroll

Quarter-hour rounding

Round the punch to the nearest 15-minute mark, then convert. 52 minutes rounds up to 60 (1.0 hour); 7 minutes rounds down to 0 (0.0 hours).

Tenth-hour rounding

Round to the nearest 6-minute mark instead — finer than quarter-hour, common in project billing. 52 minutes rounds to 54 minutes (0.9 hours).

Exact decimal

No rounding — use the precise value from this chart or the live converter. Safest when a contract or labor law requires exact time.

Need to round a full timesheet automatically instead of doing it by hand? The timesheet calculator applies quarter-hour and tenth-hour rounding to every entry at once.
